5th Graders are creating their own Egyptian Sarcophagus or Sarcophagi (the plural term) We learn about the process of making a mummy, which really grosses out the 5th Graders and they LOVE it! We'll also talk about one of the most famous sarcophagi found - King Tut and his tomb. Students will also be learning about Hieroglyphics and they will also be creating their own hieroglyphic.

Step 1: Outline the sarcophagus shape and cut out
Step 2: Each Sarcophagus will have a headdress on - create that shape
Step 3: Draw out Patterns, Symbols and Hieroglyphics - first pencil and then Sharpie marker
Step 4: Fill in the spaces with their choice of their Blue, Green or Red & then all will use Gold
Step 5 - Draw out, on a separate piece of paper, a portrait. Glue it on and add a painted horizontal line on the top of the face.

This lesson has been a recurring art lesson for my 3rd graders for the past 5 years and it has been a hit every year!
I start with presenting Matryoshka Dolls and Russia to my students. We look at different examples of Nesting Dolls and look at the similarities between the dolls.

Students choose a theme for their dolls and use tracers to get the right size for each doll. They starts with only 4 dolls but if they finish early they may add 2 more.

Tints, Shades & Tones

My 5th graders are using tints, tones and shades to create a Monochromatic painting - using one color that changes value (light and dark)
Picture
Students select one color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue or purple)
They then add white to the one color - to make a tint
They add black to the one color to make a shade.
They add both black and white to make a tone.

Students need - 3 Tints
                        - 3 Shades
                        - 1 Tone

4th graders are creating their own zentangles. Zentangles are an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.
Each student uses either their first letter of their first name or first letter of their last name. They outline their bubble letter in sharpie marker and then create surrounding patterns.
They write their name so it touches each side of the paper, that way it separates the paper into sections. They use a sharpie pen to make the patterns.

International Dot Day - September 15th

The 3rd graders start out the year working together to make lots and lots of dots! In Media, they read the book, The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. Then in art, they paint dots. They do this to celebrate International Dot Day!
International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration, began when teacher Terry Shay introduced his classroom to Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot on September 15, 2009.

The students start out with big paper and paint black dots. I don't give them a number to make, just tell them to make lots of dots!

The next day, 3rd graders make TINTS. A lighter version of a color. Each student gets one color and white - they mix the colors together to watch the color change. They trade colors, so everyone gets to use each of the colors. They paint inside of the dots.

The last day, students will be creating SHADES. A darker version of a color. Students will be getting a cup with one color and black paint. They mix them together and paint their shade around the dots

On the student's first day in the art room, after I had done A LOT of talking, I had all of my students cut out and write their name on a balloon. I then glued all the balloon together on a giant piece of paper and then drew out a house similar to the house in the movie, UP.

To the left is how I keep track of all of my classes. Each class gets a clothes pin that can move up or down, depending on how well they do in art. The more great days, the more rewards (listening to music, changing tables, playing clay wars)
