Spring Break!

Over spring break, I did some updating in our living room. I fell in love with this stencil on Amazon and read up on how to stencil wall. View Along the Way and Young House Love were two great "how to stencil and make it look good" sites.

Painted first with a flat paint

I only used tape but I think stencil spray adhesive would have worked better

First Stencil Down - I would recommend starting on the top left part of the wall and work your way left

I used a roller, applying thin layers. That's the key, thin layers instead of one thick layer

Aztec Suns

3rd graders will be making some suns inspired by the Aztec Sun Stone. This art project is one of my favorites because they all turn out so beautiful!
We will be learning about the Aztecs, a group of hunters that lived in Mexico hundreds of years ago. The Aztecs used a Sun Stone Calendar. This calendar was 12 feet tall and 4 feet wide, weighing 24 tons!
First, students will draw their sun on a piece of paper using a pencil. Inside their sun they will draw different patterns.
Once drawn, they will trace their sun onto a piece of Styrofoam. Then they will color a piece of paper with chalk pastel. 3rd graders will start the printmaking process, they will roll black ink onto their Styrofoam sun and then stamp the sun onto the paper.

Russian Onion Dome Architecture

In 4th grade, we learn about Russian Architecture - Onion Domes!
We looked at cathedrals in Russia, especially St. Basil's Cathedral.
I pass out a step-by-step handout (shown below) and we practice drawing the architecture on paper first. Once they feel comfortable drawing the Onion Domes, they may switch to Scratch Boards.
Scratch Boards are awesome sheets that either look black or white but when you use a stick, you scratch away the black to reveal the color underneath.

In this art lesson, the 5th graders use Origami to make Radial Symmetry. The may either use the origami that I show them or they can come up with their own.
They must use the same color and do the exact same origami 4 times - then they place & glue them in equal sections on their black paper. They either place the origami on the diagonal lines or the vertical/horizontal lines
Students must create at least 5 different types of origami. They may use the same color or different colors.

Picasso Portraits

The 3rd graders in their classroom have been learning about Symmetry so we just finished a lesson about symmetry and now we are starting a lesson about asymmetry.
We first learned about asymmetry with Pablo Picasso.
We compared the difference between symmetrical faces and Picasso's Portraits.

They learned that Picasso liked to show different sides of the face all at once so each student needed to have a front facing eye and a profile (side) view of the face.

Their clay is white so color their clay with markers and then mold the clay until it changes color.

1 Point Perspective Names

The 4th graders have started to make their names look 3-Dimensional by using 1-Point Perspective.

I start by having the students draw their name in BOX letters, outlining it with black sharpie markers and then coloring it in too.

Then they draw a vanishing point. This point is where all of the lines will disappear to. All corners, unless they run into their letter right away, are connected. If the eventually run into a letter, they stop.
They first draw in pencil and the outline the lines with sharpie pen.

They complete this lesson by using colored pencil and showing VALUE. Value is the light and dark of a color.

The 3rd grade is just finishing up this lesson on Radial Symmetry. In their classroom, they learned about symmetry so we are taking that information and using it in art.

1. The students first trace a circle and split the circle into 8 equal parts using a black sharpie marker.
2. Then they cut out a paper triangle that would fit into each section of the circle.
3. They create a design using shapes, lines and their name, if they want.
4. They then tape this triangle to the back of the paper and trace this triangle over and over again.
5. They color first with sharpie colors and then out line everything.

Oaxacan Metal Animal Carvings

5th Graders have been working on their own animal carvings inspired by artwork found in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Students first draw their animal on paper - they choose a realistic animal that has unrealistic patterns
Once done with paper, they get a piece of metal foil (it's thicker than aluminum foil, I think 36 gauge)
They lay the metal underneath the paper drawing and use a pencil to redraw everything.
They colored the flipped side with sharpies using unrealistic colors.
